Gail Bemis - Des Moines Waterworks

On October 23, 2015, Gail Bemis from the Des Moines Waterworks spoke to the Waukee Rotary Club.   The Des Moines Waterworks is part of the Urban Environmental Partnership which gives presentations to schools around the state.   Gail pointed out that there are three main pollutants in Iowa water:

 

1. Sentiment - from rural/agricultural resources and construction sites in cities. 

2. Bacteria - from animal waste, which includes hogs, cattle, dogs.

3.  Nitrate - from fertilizers used around the state.

 

She said at this time, the quality of water at the Waterworks is of greater concern that the quantity of water.
